چکیده

We study the substrate inhomogeneity effect on the wetting of a spin-1/2 Ising ferromagnetic film in an external magnetic field H, using Monte Carlo simulations. It is found that the inhomogeneity leads to the formation of clusters of positive and negative spins in each layer. However, depending on the values of H, for a fixed surface magnetic field Hs, each layer exhibits three different phases; totally wet (TW), nonwet (NW) and partially wet (PW). In the latter case, we show the existence of three distinct configurations namely: A configuration (PWTD) in which the layer is partially wet with a total disconnection between clusters; (PWPD) a configuration in which the layer is partially wet with a partial disconnection between clusters; the (PWTC) configuration in which the layer is partially wet and the clusters are totally connected. Furthermore, we show that an increase of Hs values breaks the bonds connecting some clusters of the phase (PWTC) which leads to an expansion of the (PWPD) region. On the other hand, the frequency distribution and the average size of clusters are investigated in the (PWTD) region for fixed values of temperature T , Hs and H. Moreover, we show the existence of 3D-islands resulting from the formation of islands in each layer. ———————————–

Flow of thin films on patterned surfaces

We present fully nonlinear time-dependent simulations of the gravity driven flow of thin wetting liquid films. The computations of the flow down a homogeneous substrate show that the contact line where liquid, solid, and gas phase meet becomes unstable and develops patterns. These computations are extended to inhomogeneous surfaces, and show that inhomogeneity can induce instability of the flui...

Effect of ion hydration on the first-order transition in the sequential wetting of hexane on brine

In recent experiments, a sequence of changes in the wetting state (‘wetting transitions’) has been observed upon increasing the temperature in systems consisting of pentane on pure water and of hexane on brine. In this sequentialwetting scenario, there occurs a first-order transition from a partial-wetting state, in which only a microscopically thin film of adsorbate is present on the substrate...

Wetting properties of a hard-spherocylinder fluid on a substrate.

A density-functional theory is used to analyze the wetting properties of a fluid made up of hard spherocylinders of a length-to-breadth ratio L/D=5 on a model substrate. The substrate imposes an exclusion boundary condition over the molecular centres of mass, while at the same time favoring a definite molecular orientation, either parallel or perpendicular to the substrate, in a region next to ...
